Our Meerkats class are toddlers who are sure on their feet. In the Meerkats class, we begin to introduce some classroom structure. Structured activities happen during circle time, when the teachers introduce letters, numbers, Bible stories and picture-making. Social development is key to a child’s learning; therefore, children are given more child-initiated playtime.

Meerkat Goals

Spiritual Goals: To develop a growing respect and love for God and his Word • Discovers that he/she is a child of God

Academic Goals: Begins to recognize letters • Begins to recognize their first name printed • Listen to others • Develops a larger vocabulary through stories and discussion • Begins to communicate verbally and through basic sign language •Follows simple instructions • Says simple Bible verses and nursery rhymes with the class • Know some basic colors and shapes

Fine Motor Skills: Begins to hold writing instruments correctly • Begins to demonstrate hand•eye coordination

Gross Motor Skills: Jump within personal space • Kick soft objects • Throw a small object from underhand positions • Learning to distinguish between safe and unsafe situations

MONKEYS

Monkeys are better equipped to handle structure and are ready to sit in groups for stories and crafts. Along with structured activity time, the Monkeys class will participate in child-initiated playtime. Structured activity time includes learning about shapes, colors, numbers, letters and painting. Monkeys will hear a Bible story and do a craft. They will also enjoy time outside or time on riding toys, as well as playing in our indoor play area.

Monkey Goals

Academic Goals: Begins to recognize letters • Begins to identify alphabet sounds • Recognize their first name printed •  Listen to others without interrupting • Develops a larger vocabulary through stories and discussion • Participates in oral discussions • Knows own name, the teacher’s name and classmates names • Speaks clearly in sentences • Follow 2• step instructions • Remember and retain simple Bible verses and nursery rhymes • Recognize numbers 0 through 10 • Count objects with one to one correspondence • Match pairs • Sort objects by various categories (color, size, shape…) • Know most basic colors and shapes

Fine Motor Skills: Begins to hold scissors and writing instruments correctly • Follow lines when tracing • Begins to demonstrate hand-eye coordination (ex: puzzles, stringing beads, ect)

KANGAROOS

At this age, the children in the Kangaroos class are prepared to handle longer structured times while still enjoying child-initiated playtime. During structured time, each child will participate in group activities including games, letter and number recognition, phonetics, storybook time, craft time (which includes painting on a regular basis) and hearing a Bible stories. Teachers will introduce line leaders in order to get them used to the concept of taking turns. Kangaroos will also go outside to play or enjoy time playing on riding toys in our indoor play area. The teachers in the Kangaroos class strive to engage each child in preschool activities.

The Elephants class is our pre-kindergarten class. During the course of the day, children will have child-initiated playtime during which they will engage in activities like making, puzzles, painting, coloring, riding toys, etc. In our structured time the teachers will work on phonics and number skills, utilizing songs, rhymes, games, worksheets and artwork. The children will also hear a Bible story and verse each day. Children will attend a structured music class once a week. Creativity is encouraged through singing, experimenting with rhythm instruments, painting, art crafts and collages.

The Bears class is our second pre-kindergarten class. Kim King

DIRECTOR OF SPKIDS PARENT’S DAY OUT

mrs. engineer, compassionate, bold introvert, closet tennis pro, integrous, big-idea launcher, cliff-jumper, organization queen

Kim grew up in Triune, about 5 miles south of Nolensville. She met her husband Tyler in civil engineering classes at Tennessee Tech University. They spent 4 years working, snow skiing, playing softball, tennis, and renovating houses before having their daughters Emily and Morgan. Kim and Tyler transitioned from Christ Community to Southpointe in 2012 and have been overwhelmed by the path God has shown them and the community which they have encountered here.
